Cold War is a passionate love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the film depicts an impossible love story in impossible times.
Cold War was Poland’s Oscar candidate in 2019, where it received three nominations: for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, for Best Director (Paweł Pawlikowski) and for Best Cinematography (Łukasz Żal). Paweł Pawlikowski was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival for Best Director. The film also received the most important award at the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia, the Golden Lions.

Cinematic Poland is an initiative of the Andrzej Wajda Film Center of the University of Gdańsk and the International Office of the University of Gdańsk, an unit established to cooperate with the foreign part of the academic community. One of its tasks is to familiarize foreigners with Polish culture, including the history of Polish cinematography. Thanks to Cinematic Poland, foreign students and employees will have the opportunity to watch both classic films and contemporary productions.
