Public Insurance for Foreigners
Are you studying in Poland and are a foreigner from outside the EU? You should insure yourself by signing a voluntary health insurance agreement with the National Health Fund (NFZ) branch responsible for your place of residence. You should pay your monthly health insurance premium yourself, unless you have a Polish Card (Karta Polaka) or a certificate of Polish origin. In such a case, the obligation to register for health insurance rests with the university where you are studying.
If you are interested in voluntary insurance, you must submit an application to the provincial branch of the National Health Fund (NFZ). You must present the following documents:
  • your passport with proof of legal residence in Poland (visa, residence card),
  • a document confirming your student status (student ID or university certificate),
  • parental permission to sign the voluntary health insurance agreement (if you are a minor).

Voluntary health insurance coverage begins on the date specified in the contract concluded with the National Health Fund (NFZ) and ends on the date of termination of that contract or after one month of uninterrupted arrears in contribution payments. As a student, you are exempt from additional fees upon signing the voluntary insurance contract.
